Harvest Moon 64 Animals
You can buy animals and items pertaining to the animals at the farm store at the Green Ranch. You can get up to eight cows and/or sheep, and six chickens in Harvest Moon 64. The cows and/or sheep stay in the barn and the chickens stay in the chicken coop. You have to feed your animals daily and brush the cows and sheep to make them happy. The cows and sheep eat fodder cut from your grass, and the chickens eat chicken feed. You can put all animals outside on sunny days, and you won't have to feed them if there's enough fully-grown grass. Be sure to put them inside on days with bad weather, of course!
Dog - Feed your dog daily by putting something in its bowl, bring it inside on rainy days, and call it a lot and you might win the dog race in the Winter.
Horse - Care for your horse by brushing and riding it daily and you'll have a good chance of winning the horse race in the Spring. You don't have to feed your horse. You can use its saddlebag as a shipping bin.
Chickens - Chickens take very minimal effort. Feed them daily with chicken feed (always stock up on that) and they'll give you an egg each day. Chickens get eaten easily if you leave them outside without a fence or dog to protect them, however.
Cows - Cows take the most work, but they also get you the most money. You have to brush them and talk to them every day if you hope to get a lot of good milk. If you forget to feed them they might get sick, in which case you'd need the medicine from the Green Ranch to get them healthy again. They'll produce milk daily once they become adults. Depending on how well you care for them, they will produce either small, medium, or large milk. A cow that wins the Cow Festival automatically produces gold milk. You can impregnate a cow using the Miracle Potion, but the cow won't produce milk for the 20 days of pregnancy.
Sheep - Sheep produce wool once a week when they become adults. Shear the wool and sell it for a pretty hefty sum. Sheep don't bring you as much money as cows, however, so the bulk of your farm should consist of the latter.
