There are quite a few crops in AWL, but all are non-renewable - none of them will produce fruit more than once before dying, even if the plant is still there after you harvest. Almost all crops will grow in more than one season and, unlike previous Harvest Moon games, they won't automatically die on the first of the next season (but they will on the second or third). Crops have three ranks which indicate quality - B, A, and S - and the crop's rank depends on how much you've watered it and how much fertilizer you've used. You'll have to pay close attention to the condition of the soil though, because crops may have to be watered more than once a day, particularly during Summer. You can also grow trees which will take quite a while to grow but then produce fruit for quite some time during their appropriate season.
You have three crop fields. The one closest to your house is the least fertile, the middle field by the chicken coop is normal soil, and the furthest field is the most fertile. You should plant crops in the far field and fertilize them to increase their rank from B to A to S. Trees can be planted in the closest field and need much more fertilizer to increase their rank. Crops cannot grow if planted within one square of a tree in any given direction, so its best to just keep them in separate fields. It's best to plant crops in a checkerboard pattern to minimize watering and increase the growth rate.
You can buy seeds and fertilizer from anyone working at Vesta's farm - Vesta, Celia, or Marlin. Vesta can also tell you what crops to plant that season. Notice that there are several pages to the menu that pops up when you talk to them, so you'll need to go over a few times to find the fertilizer and other seeds.
You'll notice that crops (that aren't S-rank) aren't very valuable in this game, so they aren't the best way to make money. Trees can be quite profitable, however.
All selling prices are when selling the crop to Van. The different selling prices shown are of the different ranks of fruits and seeds.
