Harvest Moon: BTN Animals
Cows and sheep can be bought from Barley at the Yodel Ranch, but chickens are raised by Lillia at the Chicken Ranch. You can have up to 10 chickens and up to 20 cows and/or sheep. You also get a horse for which to care (providing you treat it well) and a dog. To be able to buy any animals, you must first plant grass seed (purchased from the Supermarket) in your pasture and cut it for fodder. If any animal is left outside overnight, it can become scared, unless the dog is outside to scare away anything threatening.
Dog - Your dog is the only animal with which you start. It does not need to be fed, but as soon as possible you should buy the ball from Won and practice throwing it with your dog. Call your dog and pick him up every day, and don't leave him out in the rain. If he loves you, you can win the Dog Race in the Winter.
Horse - You are given the horse after you visit Barley in the first Spring. Brush it every day and don't leave it in the rain and Barley will let you keep it. Once it grows up after a year, you can ride it and use its saddlebags to ship crops from anywhere on your farm. You can't ride the horse away from your farm, however. You don't need to feed the horse, but daily brushing and riding will help you win the Horse Race.
Chickens - Chickens, unlike cows or sheep, do not need to be talked to or brushed daily. They cost 1500 G, but it's best to only buy one and raise the rest from eggs by placing them in the incubators in the chicken coop. Chickens produce eggs daily, if well-fed, and the eggs will be either Small, Medium, or Large, based on their love for you. A chicken will produce Gold eggs if it wins the Sumo Chicken Festival. Regular eggs can be made into mayonnaise by using the Mayonnaise Maker. Feed chickens with special chicken feed bought from the Chicken Ranch (Chicken Lil's), or you can make your own chicken feed by putting corn in the water mill next to the chicken coop.
Cows - Cows provide the most stable source of income for your farm. They cost 6000 G, but if you already have a cow you can impregnate it using a C.M. Potion, which costs only 3000 G. However, while a cow is pregnant it cannot produce milk, and the potion can only be used on adult cows. Pregnancy lasts three weeks. Cows need to be talked to and brushed every day, and should be taken outside on clear days (just be sure that they're inside on rainy or snowy days). Adult cows can be milked using the milker, and they'll produce either Small, Medium, or Large milk, depending on how much they love you. A cow produces Gold milk once it has won the Cow Festival. If a cow is not fed every day it will not produce milk for three days, so be sure to feed them. Using the Cheese Maker, milk can be changed to cheese, which sells for more.
Sheep - Sheep are not as profitable as cows, and since your allotment of twenty animals is divided between both cows and sheep, it's probably best not to invest too much in sheep. Sheep cost 4000 G or can be impregnated with S.M. Potion, which costs 3000 G. The pregnancy lasts three weeks. A healthy adult sheep will produce wool about once a week, and the wool will vary in size from Small to Large based on its love for you. A sheep that wins the Sheep Festival will produce Gold wool, which sells for the most. Talk to and brush your sheep every day, as well as feed them and let them wander in the pasture on clear days. Shear their wool using the shears. Using the Yarn Maker, wool can be turned to yarn, which sells for more.
