Harvest Moon: FoMT Animals

Raising animals is an integral source of income. Chickens will be the mainstay of your farm early, while later it will be cows and sheep. You have to feed your animals every day to keep them healthy and happy. You can have a maximum of eight chickens and sixteen cows and/or sheep (they share the same barn). Be sure to put animals inside on days of bad weather and at night, as wild dogs can come scare your animals unless your dog is an adult and is outside to scare the wild dogs away. Animals that win their respective contests produce Gold versions of their original produce, with the exception of animals that have had at least 600 hours of outdoor time - they'll produce P produce, which sells for more than even the Gold version.

Dog

  • Dog - You start with a puppy. Become better friends with him by calling him and picking him up daily. Once he matures in Fall of the first year, buy the dog ball and Frisbee from Won. You can use these to train with your dog and prepare him for the Frisbee competition every summer. Just take both your dog and your Frisbee to the beach and read the sign between Kai's lodge and Zack's house. Once he's an adult he can chase away wild animals. You don't have to feed him, and you can carry him anywhere in Mineral Town to show to people.

    Horse

  • Horse - Talk to Barley at the Yodel Ranch as soon as possible and the next morning he'll bring you a horse. If you don't treat it well (brush and talk to it daily and put him in the stable on rainy days) then once it matures Barley will take him away from you. You can get the horse back by planting 30 bags of grass. You don't have to feed your horse, however. Once your horse matures (after a little more than a year) you can ride him in the horse races that take place twice a year. You can also ride him around your farm and use his saddle as a portable shipping bin (items placed in his saddlebags will automatically be shipped at 5 PM).

    Chickens

  • Chickens - Chickens take little effort and provide a steady source of income. It's best to buy two chickens from the Poultry Farm and place an egg in the incubator in your chicken coop. It'll hatch in a few days and provide you with a new chick for free. You should breed all of your chickens this way to conserve money. Feed your chickens daily by getting chicken feed from the back of the coop (purchased from the Poultry Farm or made by putting corn in the water mill). Alternatively, you can leave your chickens grazing outside for a few hours and you will not need to feed them. Just be careful that they don't get attacked by wild dogs. You can have four chickens when you start, but once you get the chicken coop upgraded you can have up to eight. Pick your chickens up daily to make them love you more. Once you get the Mayonnaise Maker you can turn your eggs into mayonnaise, which is worth significantly more than regular eggs. Eggs can also be dipped in the hot spring to create Spa-Boiled Eggs, which are worth more than small eggs and make good gifts. Chickens die naturally after three or four years.

    Cows

  • Cows - Cows are the mainstay of your farm. A cow costs 5,000 G from the Yodel Ranch. Once it becomes an adult it will produce milk every day, which can be made into cheese, shipped, eaten, used in recipes, or given as a gift. Cows need to be brushed and talked to daily, and put outside on clear days. Don't leave them outside on days of bad weather, however. If a cow gets sick you can heal it with medicine from the Yodel Ranch. A cow that wins the Cow Contest will produce Gold milk (if it has 8 or more hearts). Cows can be made pregnant using the C.M. Potion, but a pregnant cow will not produce milk for the length of its pregnancy. Cows die naturally after about five years.

    Sheep

  • Sheep - Sheep, while profitable, do not produce as often as cows. An adult sheep can be sheered once a week, but its wool will fetch a high price. Buy sheep from the Yodel Ranch for 4000 G. Caring for sheep is just like cows, except you don't need to sheer sheep as often as you need to milk cows. Brush sheep daily, and talk to them, and let them go outside on clear days. Animal medicine will heal sheep just like other animals, and a sheep can be impregnated using S.M. Potion. A sheep that wins the Sheep Contest produces Gold wool, if it has enough hearts. Sheep die naturally after about four years.
