There are only two animals you can raise in Harvest Moon GBC. These are cows and chickens. You begin the game with a pet, either a cat or a dog. You also get a horse on the 10th of Spring. You can have up to four cows and four chickens at once.

Horse - You get a horse on the 10th of Spring in your first year, but you won't be able to ride it until Fall or so. Once it matures, you can ride it and buy saddlebags for it to ship crops in.

Chickens - Chickens take basically no work. Buy them from the animal shop and feed them every day with fodder, just like cows. Pick up and sell their eggs every day to make money. That's basically all there is to chickens.

Cows - These take hard work to maintain. Buy them from the animal shop once you have enough grass. You should talk to your cows every day, as well as brush them. You also have to feed them every day with fodder you collect from the silo. If you don't feed them they will become grumpy and, if the cow is an adult, it won't produce milk for 3 days. Take them for walks on clear days occasionally by pushing them out the front door of the barn.
