gas-guzzling geezers

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml=/motoring/2007/09/22/nosplit/mfold22.xmlI swear…not only have old people nearly killed me on the interstate countless times, but they make up their own rules as they go. Today, for instance, I was nearing an exit I had to take and was forced to get behind an old woman. This lady was driving – no exaggeration – 50 MPH in a 70 MPH zone. I had to crawl behind her only to find out she was taking the same exit, but once we hit the stop sign at the top of the exit ramp, everything changed. She took a hard left and left me in the dust, easily reaching 65 MPH not long after. That would have been great earlier, but we were now in a 50 MPH zone…she just made it up as she went along.

And this wasn’t the first older person I’ve seen with an utter disregard for speed limits. My bus driver in elementary school used to use only one speed – she’d go about 55 MPH on the interstate, making us lose valuable time when we could be getting home, but then she’d make up for it by going the same 55 MPH through residential areas. It certainly wasn’t a concern for our well-being that motivated her. Perhaps it’s just easier to always travel one speed?

It’s way too easy to keep a license in this country. :(

  1. Binary speed limits. That would be pretty awesome. There would only be a switch instead of a gas pedal.

    On = Go
    Off = Stop

    And seeing as how you can’t control the speed at which you stop, the automobile would stop as fast as it possibly could every time just in case there was an emergency.
